Brill About Town | Toronto | Beat The Heat

What was a chant for Oklahoma City fans watching the NBA Finals last night, has now become a mission for all Torontonians. With temperatures this week expected to trump those of Miami, L.A., Honolulu and Bahamas, and break heat records untouched for more than twenty years, everyone in our lovely city is looking to beat the heat. So from the comfort of our air-conditioned office, the Brill ladies got talking about tips and places to go to do just that.

For a quick, easy and delicious solution to the sweltering heat, you can’t go wrong with some good ol’ ice cream. We love The Big Chill on Manning & College for its retro décor and countless satisfying options, including (and coming highly recommended) their banana splits. It may only be a temporary solution to our heat woes, but we’re not opposed to ordering seconds.

While we wouldn’t suggest taking a dip in the lake, a rooftop pool is oh-so-chic and not as hard to come by in the city as you may think. The Thompson Hotel, already known for its breathtaking views, has a rooftop infinity pool boasting the same visual appeals. This option is restricted to guests so what to do if you don’t own an invisibility cloak or aren’t looking to spend the night? The Sheraton and Four Seasons offer affordable day passes ($30 and $65) to their outdoor pools including plenty of space to lounge, long hours of operation and other amenities that will flood your mind with memories of your last vacation.

Regardless of your plans to (try) and beat the heat, we all swear by Mavea filtered water as an essential to bring along for any plans to keep hydrated – face it, you don’t want to be that person who passes out on the subway. Victoria’s Secret Pro Airbrush FX Face Primer is also a MUST have on days like today. It’s oil-free, will help to keep shine at bay, has spf protection and will keep your make-up from turning into abstract art on your face. And hey, if worst comes to worse, take a hint from your childhood days and take a skip through a sprinkler.

Steph shares tips to keep you motivated

Anyone who knows me knows I love to exercise and stay active. Being a competitive swimmer for over a decade has instilled a drive in me to always want to be faster, better, stronger. Not everyone has that push or discipline so how do you motivate yourself to be more active?

Baby Steps- just because you joined the gym doesn’t mean you are obligated to go 5 days a week and put yourself through rigorous workouts. Pick a day and time you know will work for you and include it in your schedule; this way it becomes part of your daily routine and you’re not scrambling to squeeze it in last minute.

Expectations- People expect to see results instantly and when they don’t they become discouraged and stop going. This part is hard because everyone is looking for a quick fix to be fit you just have to remind yourself nothing worth doing is easy.

Goals- setting goals are great, but you have to be realistic.  Pick a start date and end date for yourself-about 3 months. Take your measurements, a before picture- in a bikini- and your weight before you begin. I say this because we look at our body’s everyday, so just because you don’t notice the difference after a month doesn’t mean there isn’t one.

What you eat- it is not a diet it’s a life style. You are not changing your diet until you reach your goal weight; you are changing the way you eat forever. Eating right isn’t about cutting out all junk; you just have to eat it in moderation. Keep your meals clean all week- lots of fruits and veggies, protein and a few carbs- then have a cheat day. One day out of 7 treat yourself to whatever you feel like eating.

Find a buddy! – Even the most motivated people need a little extra push. Find a friend or someone at the gym to work out with. This makes all of the above so much easier to do. You will have set times to meet, workouts planned and you’ll even help each other eat right.

These are just a few ways to get you in the gym. I use all of them, especially the find a buddy it helps me get to the gym even when I have no energy to be there.

Until next time,

Steph

Diary of an Intern | Sophie’s Yoga adventures

What started off as peer pressure from a roommate a couple of years ago, has now become a slight obsession – like many others, I’m hooked on yoga. For those who are hesitant to try it, I understand; I used to think of it as an hour-long waste of time that didn’t burn nearly as many calories as a good run, but now I reap all the benefits that this low-risk injury workout has to offer. Regular yoga practice can help lower levels of anxiety, anger and depression and I think we could all stand to smile a little more.

That being said, for anyone looking to add yoga into their workout regime, or maybe just try a new studio, these are my top 3 recommendations conveniently located in the GTA…

Moksha Yoga:  With locations scattered all over the world (6 in the GTA) and a green philosophy, Moksha is the perfect studio for the eco friendly jetsetter. Monthly passes are globally transferable so no matter where your travels take you there’s time to squeeze in some Warrior 1. Gorgeous amenities and heated class options come standard.

Downward Dog Yoga Centres: Their two locations at Queen West Trinity Bellwoods and the Beaches offer great class selections, workshops, and are set in more outdoorsy and activity based neighborhoods.

Yoga Tree: In addition to their exceptional class selection and instructors, Yoga Tree offers the widest range of class times whether you’re an early riser or after-work-yogie.
